Leonard Weiss, M.D., founder of Psychiatry Austin, works with each individual to create a comprehensive plan for mental health wellness.
Dr. Weiss brings to his Psychiatric practice decades of additional experience in Internal Medicine and Nutrition. He understands how to look at symptoms through multiple lenses. This approach helps patients to stabilize physically and medically, as a cornerstone in their psychiatric health.
Dr. Weiss adds, as indicated, the component of his own personalized brand of psychotherapy. He combines a combination of psychotherapy, analytic/psychodynamic approach and holds certifications in the newer techniques of DEEP and EMDR.
Dr. Weiss is also a member of the local therapy organization, Austin In Connection.

Our Specialties
Forensic Psychiatrist: Dr. Weiss works closely with attorneys and agencies where there is a need for an objective expert in the interface of psychiatry and law. He serves as a medical-legal consultant, expert witness and competency and sanity evaluations in private litigation, criminal law and the Travis County Criminal Judiciary. He also works with PRN to conduct evaluations and reports for the Pharmacy, Dental, Veterinary and Optometry Boards. He assists in presenting evidence in court, advising parole boards and mental health tribunals. He is certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in the subspecialty Forensic Psychiatry.
Addiction Specialist: Dr. Weiss is doubly Board-Certified in Addiction Medicine, the treatment of Addictive Disorders, by the American Board of Addiction Medicine (ABAM) and the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology (ABPN). Dr. Weiss provides specific services for the treatment of chemical dependency and addiction which includes: assessment, recommendations for detoxification and rehabilitation programs, and provides ongoing support for medication management and psychotherapy.

Leonard Weiss, M.D.

Dr. Weiss' psychiatric residency training was at Michael Reese Hospital of the University of Chicago. After graduation, he started the dual diagnosis group psychotherapy program at Michael Reese. He also taught geriatric psychiatry while a member of the faculty of Rush Medical School and was published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry.
Prior to this, Dr. Weiss did bench research in nutrition while an undergraduate at MIT, followed by a straight medical internship at Metropolitan Hospital of NY Medical College, an internal medicine residency at Ford Hospital of the University of Michigan, and a Nutrition Fellowship at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center of the University of Cornell and Columbia.
While in private practice, Dr. Weiss started the second largest outpatient aftercare program at St. Bernard’s Hospital in Chicago. He taught residents and medical students at Michael Reese Hospital and Chicago Osteopathic Hospital. In addition, from 1991 to 1999, Dr. Weiss did forensics work for the Illinois Department of Professional Regulation and Medical Disciplinary Board as well as the Drug Enforcement Administration.
